Krishna is not a historical person

Janmashatmi is the celebration of Lord Krishna’s birth. On the eight day of the black half of BHADRA ( Aug – Sep ) was born Shri Krishna, the eight Avtar or incarnation of Vishnu. Therefore, this day is well known as Janmashtami or Krishna Janmashtami. In the Bhagvat Gita, Krishna declares – “All this universe has been created by me ; all things exist in me” and Arjuna addresses him as “The Super universal spirit, the supreme dwelling, the eternal person, divine prior of the Gods, unborn omnipresent”. His life is celebrated in great detail in the Puranas like the Harvmsha and Shrimad Bhagvatam.

Shri Krishna is not a historical person. Bhagvad Gita is not written by a historian. The birth of Krishna is a fact repeated every moment in everybody’s life.

Krishna is not a historical figure. He is the perpetual truth. He does not belong to the past. He is the ever present immediate moment.

According to the legends, the birth of Krishna took place under extraordinary circumstances, Krishna was an incarnation of Lord Vishnu who comes to the world to get rid of all evil demons. He was born at night stroke on a dark ,rainy night to ‘Devki’ and ‘Vasudev’ who had been imprisoned by Devki’s brother –Kansa.

It had been foretold that the eighth son of Devki would kill the evil king Kansa. Upon hearing these prophesy, Kansa had his sister put into prison. He killed her seven childrenone by one but when Krishna was born, there was divine intervention to save the baby Krishna. The guards had fallen into deep slumber and were unable to inform their master about the newborn child .A voice commanded Vasudev to take the baby to Gokul and exchange with the newborn baby of Nanda and Yashoda . The shackles and the prison gates opened miraculously and Vasudev carried the child in a small basket ,through the waters of Yamuna, As it was a dark stormy night ,the water of Yamuna were raging but parted to let the carrier of the divine Krishna pass.

A huge snake known as ‘Adisesh’ with 2000 hoods, glided behind them, its hoods formed a protective Canopy over the child.

As a little boy, Krishna was the heart-beat of Gokul , he used to steal curd and butter from the houses of Gopikas . Even though he was a child, he performed several miracles.

Even thousands of years after his heavenly abode, people observe this day as a day of fortune and

commemorate the birth of Lord Krishna by fasting and feasting. People believe Krishna to be the ultimate savior of the world. One who unlike other gods, can be regarded, as a lover, friend, divine guru or one’s own child. People mesmerized with Krishna’s persona and deeds can be seen singing and dancing in the name of Krishna to eternity on the day of Janmashtami. It is the deep faith and devotion of people towards him that the festival is still celebrated with a great honor, joy as well as elation as it was celebrated thousands of years back.
